Let’s have fun and learn these school holidays.
Primary school kids adore laser tag.
It feels like their favourite computer game “come to life”. The games are straightforward to organise but epic to play. Not to mention it’s an active game that encourages teamwork and planning.
It’s the perfect hook to get kids thinking about the technology behind our daily lives and inspire them to learn more. Discover how different technologies combine to great this fantastic game!
1️⃣ Laser Tag Engages Kids in STEM Laser Tag is a fun dynamic game that uses modern technology
2️⃣ Inspire Their Imagination Get your students thinking about the technology that goes into Laser Tag and how they might use that in their adult lives
3️⃣ Activities For the Entire Day Introduce the topics of "Radio Waves" and "Light Waves"
The laser tag system in a practical – and interesting – application of radio technology. The taggers use radio to communicate with each other.
During your laser tag day, we recommend dividing the kids up by age group. That means during the day, you’ll want to have a few extra activities for the kids. Here are some fun ideas that match with the day’s STEM goals:
Introduce the concept of “radio waves” with an old school radio. Radio stations each have an assigned frequency for their music. Have the children explore the different radio stations in your area. Do they have a favourite radio station?
Next it’s time to get moving! Get in a circle and hold hands. Lift your hands up and down. When the music is fast paced: go super fast! When the music is slower go super slow... Just like radio waves!
Make “string telephones”. The vibrations through the strings are similar to sound waves. The person on the other side can hear what the kids is saying because of those waves.
We have a fun worksheet you can step the kiddos through to introduce the concept of “radio” being used with the laser tag!
This is not a test! There are two questions they can try to answer, individually or as a group.

Despite the word “laser” in its name, Laser Tag doesn’t actually use lasers!
Instead, it uses infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. The emitter at the front of the tagger sends out a beam of infrared light containing certain data. If that beam hits a sensor, that tagger reads the data and responds.
It's kind of like a TV remote control, but bigger!
The sent data includes team information; the computer can ignore this message if the taggers are on the same team.
Plenty of modern devices uses infrared technology to work. These include:
Have the kids brainstorm cool and interesting technology that might use infrared or radio if they were developing a new device. Could they send signals to the moon? Or maybe they could hide secret messages on signs you can only see with night-vision goggles.
The new technology could be weird, helpful, or wonderful.
Get out paper and pencils and have the kids draw their ideas. Ask them how infrared could be used to make these ideas a reality.
