Bonus Flag Quiz

While you are colouring-in ask your kids if they know how many country’s flags, other than Australia, are made up of red, white and blue.  See how many they can name! (Scroll to the bottom of the page for the answer.)

Did you know: According to Google, there is a lot of symbolism associated with the Australian Flag colours.

The colours on the Australian flag represent the following:

  • Blue - vigilance, truth and loyalty, perseverance & justice - Dark Blue (#00008B)
  • White - peace and honesty - White (#FFFFFF)
  • Red - hardiness, bravery, strength & valour - Red (#FF0000)

The red, white and blue feature in the top right-hand corner of the Australia Flag as a miniature Union Jack (or Union Flag).

The rest of the flag features the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross is a famous star formation or constellation in the southern hemisphere’s night sky.

This pattern is made up of five white stars – one small five-pointed star and four, larger, seven-pointed stars. The very large 7-pointed star in the bottom left-hand corner of the flag is the "Commonwealth Star".

A version of the Australian Flag design has been used since 1901, since our country's Federation.

The current design was enshrined in law in 1953.

For a fun twist on this kid’s colouring activity, change it up, and use different materials for the colouring.

Use whatever materials inspire you and your kids.  For example, you could do one set in pencil and repeat the kids’ activity in watercolours for a completely different look and feel.

It's just up to your imagination!  Another cool idea, if you want to make the colours stand out more, is adding using glitter. Or even other materials you can add in for texture, like glueing some sanding onto the paper.

Each child's flag will have its own special touch and look so unique.

There are 29 countries that use the three colours of red, white & blue in their national flag.

Here's the list:

  • Australia
  • USA
  • UK
  • Cambodia
  • Chile
  • Costa Rica
