It has quickly surged in popularity and dominates the world of teen gamers.

The video game inspires the game mechanics of the live version. In the video game, the scenario starts with 100 players, and the challenge is to survive long enough to emerge as the last gamer standing.

Gamers fly over a map in a bus. Yes, a party bus! Then, choose when to eject, hopefully landing away from other players. The at-home live-action version might not have 100 players, but the basic idea is the same.

All the gamers start in the middle, and they have 30 seconds to get to a good starting point. Because the batteries are long-lasting, you can play the Battle Royale mission over and over.

Just like in the video game, the live version gradually forces the combatants to enter an ever-shrinking playing field.

Laser Tag is a high-tech "hide and seek" game, so players will need items to hide behind.

A good rule of thumb is that if you have 12 gamers playing at once, then you need at least 12 things to hide behind.

Build a Battlefield in your Backyard

Well, perhaps not a REAL battlefield. :-)

In preparing for the Battle Royale party, your crew can “build a battlefield in your backyard”.

Okay, so while you might be unable to build wooden ramps and buildings in the garden, you can deck it out with camo nets or inflatables.

If you are printing out your decorations or signs, use an army-style stencil font for the text. I've found that "Burbank Condensed" or "Luckiest Guy" (a Google font) work well.

Using signage that matches the Fortnite theme effectively sets out the different areas of the house and backyard for eating, playing, etc.

HINT: You might also want to add in a party pinata, such as a Llama Pinata.

You might also consider inviting the kids to wear costumes, like their favourite skins in the video game. But be prepared; you might end up seeing a lot of Tomato Heads and galactic ninjas.

No party is complete without party food, and with a Fortnite theme, the options are endless. While professional catering can be expensive, you can save a lot if you have a party at home. Look for bargain buys for napkins, disposable cups, and plates.

If you can prepare many items beforehand, the day of your event will be less stressful. Consider making or buying battle cupcakes a week before and freezing them until party day.

Say you are inviting 16 kids. Make 16 cupcakes and place them out in the shape of the birthday boy or girl's age. Then, get some cupcake stickers for decorations, such as silhouettes of forts or troopers.

A two-tier made-to-order birthday cake can cost upwards of $300+. So making your own can certainly save you. There is no harm in buying a cake mix or sponge slab cake from a store and then decorating it. Llama Cakes are in.
