If you’re looking to host a laser tag party in your backyard, you’re in the right place.
We love helping Mums & Dads (not to mention Teachers and Educators) create unforgettable memories and celebrate special milestones.
But before you rent a laser tag box, here are some of the biggest mistakes people make—and how to avoid them. Overlooking these details could turn your dream party into a disaster!
Sounds perfect, right?
But between setting up zones, explaining the game rules, and keeping a pack of energized kids from total mayhem, a DIY laser tag party can easily spiral from "epic" to "utterly overwhelming."
Don't let that happen!
We've seen it all, and we're here to help you avoid the biggest pitfalls that turn a laser tag party into a laser tag into a stressful mess.
Discover the seven crucial mistakes you must dodge for a smooth, stress-free, and spectacularly fun birthday bash.
One of the biggest mistakes is not setting a clear budget. Booking a party at a laser tag arena or theme park can quickly get expensive.
Renting a laser tag set and playing at home is a budget-friendly alternative - but don't forget to factor in decorations, food, and party favours.
Setting a budget upfront helps you prioritise spending and avoid last-minute stress.
We get it: Laser Tag is popular! Sometimes everyone (and their dog!) wants to come to your party! ;-)
Or maybe your kiddo invited more and more people. There is a solution.
But overcrowding your backyard can ruin the fun of the game. Players need enough space to move and strategize.
Solution: If you have 24 guests, rent a laser tag set for 12 players.
Everyone gets a turn, and it keeps things fun and fair. (Plus, it helps with your budget -- see Mistake #1.)
Before the party, decide on:
Pro Tip: Our Laser Tag in a Box rental sets include easy step-by-step instructions and fun game modes. Team Elimination (aka TDM) is one of the most popular—it’s simple to run and super fun! Team Elimination is one of our most popular! Easy to run for you and super fun for them!
Brief all players before starting for a fair, enjoyable game.
Some party hosts make two common mistakes: There are not enough obstacles, and the game feels empty.
Obstacles spread too thin – No real cover to hide behind.
Solution: Use inflatable bunkers, cardboard boxes, trees, or bushes to create a fun maze.
A good rule of thumb: one obstacle per player. If you rent a 12-player set, you should set up at least 12 obstacles. This could be made of, say, a set of 4 inflatables, some cardboard boxes from your local hardware store, and maybe some camo nets.
Planning a twilight or evening part? Lighting is key.
Without it, players can’t see where they’re going, and the game can become unsafe.
Solution: Use outdoor lights, glow sticks, or LED markers to define play zones. The good news? Our laser taggers have built-in light effects—so the game looks amazing in the dark!
To keep things friendly, give your neighbours a heads-up before the party.
A simple “Hey, we’re hosting a laser tag party this weekend!” goes a long way in keeping the peace.
Solution: Set up a covered area or be ready to move indoors.
Fun fact: Our laser tag equipment works indoors and outdoors—rain or shine! One customer shared how they saved their party:
On the day of my daughter's 18th Birthday, forecast showers. So we cleared out the garage. We set up the barricades, half in the garage and half in the driveway. The teens loved it! A bit of rain wasn't going to stop them.
Being prepared ensures the fun continues, no matter the weather.
