Powerhouse mother-daughter duo share the secrets to their business success.
Is the thought of working day in, day out with your mum enough to give you the sweats? Well, this mother-daughter duo proves that when it comes to running a business, it can be a match made in heaven, writes Annette Densham.
While many will declare, “I could never work with my mum”, there are many benefits to keeping business in the family.
With 30 per cent of businesses owned and run by women in Australia, and 62 per cent of companies owned or managed by family members, it’s unsurprising that women are doing what they do best – collaborating and working as a team.
For those kicking around the idea of going into business with their mum or daughter, here are some tips that might make the journey smoother.
Laser Tag in a Box is a family business so naturally, as owner Nicole's young family grew up, they became involved. Including Nicole’s daughter, Zabrynn.
When Zabrynn was nine, she started helping with the business.
“My mum has taught me a lot,” Zabrynn said. “Now I’m older, we work together in building new aspects of the business, such as expanding our Laser Tag technology into high-tech Laser Tag wands.”
“My mum is a sci-fi tragic, so the direction of the business has always been towards that. Laser Tag takes a lot of inspiration from movies like Star Wars. But I’ve always loved fantasy. Being able the cast magic in what’s basically a fantasy novel come to life is a dream. So, I’m excited to work with my mum as we create Magic Tag.”
Everyone brings their own skills and perspectives to the business and that’s never truer than with a Mother & Daughter duo. At Laser Tag in a Box, it’s all about working as a team towards creating a fantastic adventure for our customers.
“I appreciate my daughter’s creativity and honesty. She’s not bashful about letting me know her opinion!” said Nicole.
Nicole’s advice for working with your daughter?
“Listen to one another. Value each other’s perspective. It is a special gift to work with your family, so it is important to appreciate it,” said Nicole
"Though we approach things from different perspectives, my mum and I are a lot alike. We share a lot of the same passions and interests so when we put our heads together, we come up with some awesome ideas," said Zabrynn.
“There will be ups-and-downs, especially when your visions don’t align. But if you’re anything like us, sometimes you’ll find that you’ll be arguing despite actually agreeing! Take a step back and find the point where your perspectives meet – that’s where the best plans are,” said Zabrynn.
